Spring 2014 Minerva Lecture Series by Prof. Martin Hairer

The Spring 2014 Minerva Lectures by Prof. Martin Hairer (University of Warwick) will take place during the week of February 24, 2014.

Prof. Hairer will deliver a five talk series titled:

“Regularity Structures”

Abstract: When considering the large-scale behaviour of physical models arising naturally in statistical mechanics, one is often lead to stochastic partial differential equations that seem to be nonsensical: they are typically nonlinear with nonlinearities involving products of distributions. Examples of such models are the KPZ equation, the dynamical $\Phi^4_3$ model, the continuous parabolic Anderson model, etc. The theory of regularity structures provides a unified way of interpreting and analysing these equations in a robust way. It also provides a clean separation of the problem into an algebraic, an analytic, and a probabilistic component. I will give an introduction to the main concepts and results of the theory, as well as a number of applications.

February 24 – 27, 2014 from 5:30pm-7pm, Room 507 Math
February 28, 2014 from 11am-1pm, SSW 903 (1255 Amsterdam Ave.)

Fall 2013 Samuel Eilenberg Lecture Series by Prof. Joe Harris

Prof. Joe Harris (Harvard University) will give a weekly lecture every Friday during the Fall 2013 semester for the Samuel Eilenberg Lecture Series. The lectures begin on Friday, September 6, 2013.

Title: Parameter Spaces in Algebraic Geometry

Abstract: One of the most fundamental aspects of algebraic geometry is the existence of parameter spaces: in other words, the fact that certain classes of objects (for example, curves of given degree and genus in projective space) are themselves naturally parameterized by other varieties and schemes. The presence of these parameter spaces enriches the subject tremendously, both helping us frame questions about varieties and giving us tools to answer them. In this series of talks, we’ll explore this idea, focusing on examples and open problems.

Spring 2013 Ritt Lectures by Prof. Jonathan Pila

The Spring 2013 Ritt Lectures by Prof. Jonathan Pila will take place on April 29th and April 30th. Prof. Pila (University of Oxford) will deliver a two talk series titled:

“Functional transcendence and atypical intersections”

Abstract:  I will explain the Zilber-Pink conjecture on “unlikely intersections.” This is a far-reaching generalisation of the Manin-Mumford, Mordell-Lang, and Andre-Oort conjectures. I will describe how some problems of this type may be approached with methods involving the model-theoretic notion of “o-minimality” and the crucial role played here and in the provenance of the conjecture by Schanuel’s conjecture on the transcendence properties of the exponential function and its analogues.

Monday, April 29, 2013 from 5:30pm-6:30pm, Room 207 Math
Tuesday, April 30, 2013 from 4:30pm-5:30pm, Room 520 Math
