Prerequisites

Prerequisites: MATH V1101 with a grade of B or better or Math V1102, or the equivalent. 


Textbooks

James Stewart - Calculus, Early Transcendentals (8th Edition) 


Content of the course

Vectors in dimensions 2 and 3, complex numbers and the complex exponential function with applications to differential equations, Cramer's rule, vector-valued functions of one variable, scalar-valued functions of several variables, partial derivatives, gradients, surfaces, optimization, the method of Lagrange multipliers (i.e. chapters 12, 13 and 14 of the textbook). Grading policy

Homework: 20% 

Midterms: 20% each 

Final exam: 40 %


Homework

Most of the homework will be assigned via WebAssign where you will give your answers online. Informations on how to use WebAssign can be obtained here . The class key for this course is columbia 4711 8559
Sometimes there will be written homework assignments to be handed in. They will be notified via courseworks and email along with the due date and time. Late homework will accepted but 20% of its grade for each late day will be taken off. You are encouraged to discuss the homework with other fellow students. However, you must write up the final solutions by yourself. 


To receive credit you must

1. Write your name and the course name clearly on the front.

2. Staple your work.

3. Justify your work (not just write the answer) and simplify your answers as far as possible.

4. Hand in your work in the designated mail box outside room 410 with my name on it on the 4th flour of the math department.


You can see your grades in the Courseworks Grade Book. Your graded homeworks will be returned in class one week later. Uncollected homework should be retrieved and left in front of 604/605 Math in the receptacle provided for a period of two weeks. It will be discarded after that period of time.


Exams

Midterm Exams

There will be two midterm exams which are scheduled on October 1st , 2015 and November 5th, 2015 during the usual class schedule. Midterm reviews will be posted here and will be explained during the class preceding the midterm.


Final exam

The final exam will be given on December 22nd, 2015 from 1:10pm to 4pm. All students must take the final exam at the time scheduled by the university.


Conflicts

If you have a conflict with any of the exams, please contact the instructor as soon as possible and at least one week before the exam. Make-up exams will not be given. Students can only be excused from the exams because of serious illness; you will need a note from your doctor or dean.

Academic honesty

Copying your written work from somebody else or from any other source is considered cheating and will be dealt with severely. Permitting someone else to copy your work is also considered cheating. Any cheating during midterms or finals will result in you failing the course and the matter being reported to your dean. No electronic devices like phone or calculator will be allowed during the exams.
