{"id":595,"date":"2007-09-05T13:58:44","date_gmt":"2007-09-05T18:58:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=595"},"modified":"2007-10-30T07:41:20","modified_gmt":"2007-10-30T12:41:20","slug":"updates-on-plagiarism-scandal-journal-of-k-theory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=595","title":{"rendered":"Updates on Plagiarism Scandal, Journal of K-theory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Plagiarism Scandal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s Nature has an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v449\/n7158\/full\/449008b.html\">article<\/a> by Geoff Brumfiel with more details on the plagiarism scandal described <a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=590\">here<\/a>.   At last count it involves 15 authors, 67 papers on the arXiv, of which about 35 were refereed and published, in 18 different journals.  The arXiv has set up a <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/new\/withdrawals.aug.07.html\">special page<\/a> with information about this.   As far as I can tell from checking a few examples, most of the published papers are still available online at the journals, with no indication of their plagiarized nature.  One exception is the plagiarized paper at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iop.org\/EJ\/abstract\/1126-6708\/2006\/12\/078\">JHEP<\/a>, which has now been removed, with the notation<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This paper has been removed because of plagiarism. We regret that the paper was published.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As far as I know, neither JHEP nor any of the journals has given any indication of an  intent to change their refereeing procedures because of this scandal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Journal of K-theory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The editors of the new Journal of K-theory have issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/noncommutativegeometry.blogspot.com\/2007\/09\/news-on-k-front.html\">public statement<\/a>, explaining in detail their plans for how to handle papers submitted to the older journal, K-theory, where they had resigned as editors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plagiarism Scandal Today&#8217;s Nature has an article by Geoff Brumfiel with more details on the plagiarism scandal described here.
