{"id":584,"date":"2007-08-17T13:14:33","date_gmt":"2007-08-17T18:14:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=584"},"modified":"2007-09-15T10:45:36","modified_gmt":"2007-09-15T15:45:36","slug":"ask-a-string-theorist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=584","title":{"rendered":"Ask a String Theorist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over at Uncertain Principles Chad Orzel is taking a break and turning over his blog temporarily to, among others, string theorist Aaron Bergman, who has started things off with a posting called <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2007\/08\/ask_a_string_theorist_1.php\">Ask a String Theorist<\/a>.   In my experience, Aaron is significantly more reasonable than other string theorists who have been active bloggers, so his postings should be worth paying attention to.<\/p>\n<p>So far though, his response to a question about the testability of string theory has been<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I think I&#8217;d like to avoid that subject for now (and possibly for a long time more)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and he promises some advertising for AdS\/CFT, as well as a three-part series of postings on the multiverse.  For better or worse, I think he&#8217;ll do a good job of reflecting mainstream thinking among string theorists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>:  Unfortunately, so far the person answering questions about string theory at Uncertain Principles is not Aaron but Lubos Motl.   The problem for string theorists is that he represents all too accurately their views, so they can&#8217;t justify censoring him.
