{"id":4468,"date":"2012-03-05T21:14:38","date_gmt":"2012-03-06T02:14:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=4468"},"modified":"2012-03-07T08:35:29","modified_gmt":"2012-03-07T13:35:29","slug":"tevatron-higgs-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=4468","title":{"rendered":"Tevatron Higgs Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The combined D0 + CDF Tevatron results on the Higgs are scheduled to be announced Wednesday, but it looks like <a href=\"http:\/\/www-cdf.fnal.gov\/physics\/new\/hdg\/\/Results_files\/widget1_markup_winter_2012.html\">this web-page<\/a> may have jumped the gun a bit, listing the new results (based on &#8220;up to 10 inverse fb&#8221;) as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>SM Higgs is excluded between 147 and 179 GeV there is a greater than 2-sigma excess observed at low mass.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/tevnphwg.fnal.gov\/results\/SM_Higgs_Summer_11\/\">summer 2011 combination<\/a> excluded at 95% the mass range 156-177 GeV, so the new results extend this slightly higher and <strike>11<\/strike> 9 GeV lower.  The most intriguing aspect is the &#8220;2-sigma excess at low mass&#8221;, which is about what you might expect them to be seeing if there really is a 125-6 GeV Higgs as the LHC data suggests.  In the H->b bbar channel that the Tevatron is most sensitive to (and that the LHC is not sensitive to) the expected signal is very wide, not allowing much of a fix on the Higgs mass (see <a href=\"http:\/\/resonaances.blogspot.com\/2012\/03\/higgs-teaser-from-cdf.html\">Resonaances<\/a> for more of an explanation of this).<\/p>\n<p>Details to appear Wednesday, at<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/tevnphwg.fnal.gov\/results\/SM_Higgs_Winter_12\/<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: Matt Strassler has written a long posting to provide context and caveats for these results <a href=\"http:\/\/profmattstrassler.com\/2012\/03\/06\/awaiting-higgs-news-from-the-tevatron-experiments\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: Results described here a couple days ago now official (2.2 sigma).
