{"id":4374,"date":"2012-01-09T17:58:13","date_gmt":"2012-01-09T22:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=4374"},"modified":"2012-01-11T17:00:51","modified_gmt":"2012-01-11T22:00:51","slug":"galois-conference-videos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=4374","title":{"rendered":"Galois Conference Videos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last October there was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galois.ihp.fr\/manifestations\/colloque\/\">conference<\/a> held in Paris to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Galois.  Some of the talks were quite interesting, giving an overview of the current state of areas of mathematics in which Galois theory plays a role, in particular the Langlands conjectures.  The videos of the talks are now available, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.cpm.upmc.fr\/videotheque\/differe.php?collec=S_C_galois\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.cpm.upmc.fr\/videotheque\/differe.php?collec=S_C_galois&#038;video=17\">closing talk<\/a>, by Alain Connes, has a certain amount of wild-eyed speculation about the &#8220;cosmic Galois group&#8221;, of the sort that I believe has inspired Arkani-Hamed recently (see the previous posting).<\/p>\n<p>Roy Lisker reports (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fermentmagazine.org\/Galois\/GaloisI1.html\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fermentmagazine.org\/Galois\/Galois2.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fermentmagazine.org\/Galois\/Galois3.html\">here<\/a>) about his visit to Paris to attend the conference, as well as take a look at Galois&#8217;s manuscripts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>:  It appears the Connes video is no longer there.
