{"id":3981,"date":"2011-09-15T20:29:32","date_gmt":"2011-09-16T00:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=3981"},"modified":"2011-09-15T22:07:12","modified_gmt":"2011-09-16T02:07:12","slug":"no-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=3981","title":{"rendered":"No News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been hearing no interesting news from the LHC recently, about all I&#8217;ve learned is that CMS\/ATLAS haven&#8217;t even decided whether it&#8217;s worth combining their latest public data (probably not, what is much more interesting is the large amount of data they are now analyzing separately).  So my plan for next week is to travel to Antwerp, where I&#8217;ll try and get Tommaso Dorigo drunk and see what I can find out.  We&#8217;ll both be at TEDx, he&#8217;s got more of the story <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science20.com\/quantum_diaries_survivor\/explaining_higgs_tedx-82671\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian Cho has a wonderful long <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/333\/6049\/1564.full\">piece in Science<\/a> (and podcast <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/333\/6049\/1564\/suppl\/DC1\">here<\/a>) about the sociology of the two big experiments at the LHC.  It gives some insight into the process by which a Higgs result is likely to emerge, including the steps being taken to make sure that some group doesn&#8217;t &#8220;parachute in&#8221; at the last moment to try and capture glory.
