{"id":377,"date":"2006-04-18T12:49:53","date_gmt":"2006-04-18T17:49:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=377"},"modified":"2006-05-12T22:39:30","modified_gmt":"2006-05-13T03:39:30","slug":"susskind-turns-down-templeton-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=377","title":{"rendered":"Susskind Turns Down Templeton Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OK, maybe they haven&#8217;t offered it to him yet, but over at the Edge web-site, in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edge.org\/3rd_culture\/horgan06\/horgan06_index.html#rc\">comment<\/a> about John Horgan&#8217;s recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=370\">piece about the Templeton Foundation<\/a>, Susskind writes:<\/p>\n<p><i>I don&#8217;t understand the idea that a convergence between science and religion is taking place. I don&#8217;t believe in any such convergence. Throwing huge amounts of money at scientists who claim to see such a convergence can only lead to a dangerous blurring of boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>I hereby pledge to refuse any prize for advancing the so called convergence between science and religion.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I missed Susskind&#8217;s recent public talk here in New York, about his book which the New York Academy of Sciences describes as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyas.org\/about\/newsDetails.asp?newsID=221\">&#8220;revolutionizing the field of physics&#8221;<\/a>.  There is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyas.org\/snc\/podcasts.asp\">podcast<\/a> recorded just before his talk.  He makes his usual points including claiming that the situation of the string theory anthropic landscape is similar to that of Darwin and the theory of evolution.
