{"id":3104,"date":"2010-08-17T20:21:53","date_gmt":"2010-08-18T00:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=3104"},"modified":"2010-08-19T10:22:15","modified_gmt":"2010-08-19T14:22:15","slug":"gossip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=3104","title":{"rendered":"Gossip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the date for announcement of the 2010 Fields Medals approaches, gossip about who the winners might be has been circulating.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mathoverflow.net\">Math Overflow<\/a> is by far the best internet site for authoritative discussion between knowledgeable mathematicians, but, unlike this site, they have a &#8220;no gossip&#8221; rule, leading to the closing of discussion threads like <a href=\"http:\/\/mathoverflow.net\/questions\/33358\/fields-medalist\">this one<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can bet on who the Fields Medalists might be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betcoffee.com\/bets?category_id=629&#038;locale=en&#038;running_filter=true\">here<\/a>.  I assume there&#8217;s no bet possible for Ngo since he&#8217;s a sure thing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: It&#8217;s Ngo and Villani, also Elon Lindenstrauss and Stanislav Smirnov.  For the announcement and information about the work of the prize winners, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icm2010.org.in\/imu-prizes\/prize-winners-2010\">here<\/a>.  Accurate rumors about this don&#8217;t seem to have started circulating until the ICM announced the winners to the press late Tuesday.  This information was embargoed until today, breaking the embargo didn&#8217;t seem sporting&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>:  Best blog by far for following this is that of <a href=\"http:\/\/gowers.wordpress.com\/\">Timothy Gowers<\/a>, who was on the committee that picked the Fields medal winners, and <a href=\"http:\/\/gowers.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/19\/icm2010-opening-ceremony-in-brief\">promises<\/a> to tell us about Cedric Villani&#8217;s outfit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the date for announcement of the 2010 Fields Medals approaches, gossip about who the winners might be has been circulating.
