{"id":3061,"date":"2010-07-07T21:09:54","date_gmt":"2010-07-08T01:09:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=3061"},"modified":"2010-07-07T21:23:30","modified_gmt":"2010-07-08T01:23:30","slug":"various-and-sundry-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=3061","title":{"rendered":"Various and Sundry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<li>It seems that Jean-Pierre Serre now spends his time <a href=\"http:\/\/quomodocumque.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/07\/happy-birthday-dick-gross\/#comment-4731\">commenting<\/a> on blogs.<\/li>\n<li>For those interested in particle physics history, there&#8217;s an interesting article by George Zweig <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1007.0494\">here<\/a> about his role in the discovery of quarks (which he called &#8220;aces&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s a very nice new <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1007.0531\">survey article<\/a> by Mikhail Shifman about QCD, especially about hopes to exploit supersymmetric models to better understand non-perturbative issues.<\/li>\n<li>Blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/stringtheoryfan.wordpress.com\">String Theory Fan<\/a> still gets hits from the <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/tb\/1006.2170\">trackback<\/a> to his blog entry over there.  Trackbacks to hep-th papers from here still seem to be censored, but people find out about the postings anyway.  For instance, the authors of <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1005.4915\">this recent paper<\/a> have put out a revised version adding a reference to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.ucsd.edu\/~nwallach\/venice.pdf\">earlier calculation<\/a> in the math literature pointed out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=2977\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you like listening to talks by Nobel Laureates, there&#8217;s a whole bunch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindau-nobel.org\/WebHome.AxCMS\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>One person who is more than distinguished enough to be a Nobel Laureate but isn&#8217;t one since he made the mistake of being born too late is Edward Witten.  Last week he was in Europe collecting other well-deserved medals: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lorentz.leidenuniv.nl\/lorentzmedal\/\">Lorentz Medal<\/a> in Amsterdam and the <a href=\"http:\/\/physicsworld.com\/cws\/article\/news\/43054\">Newton Meda<\/a>l in London.  Evidently he was giving two talks, one for the public and one more technical.  The public one was entitled <em> String Theory and the Universe<\/em> and probably not to my taste.  It should appear at some point <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iop.org\/about\/awards\/international\/page_38400.html\">here<\/a>, but for now there&#8217;s a report <a href=\"http:\/\/physicsworld.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/master_of_the_path_integral_sp.html\">here<\/a> at Physics World.  Michael Green introduced Witten with the accurate title of &#8220;Master of the Path Integral&#8221;.  The more technical one may have better shown off Witten&#8217;s mastery; it had the fascinating title of <em>A New Look At The Path Integral of Quantum Mechanics<\/em>, and I&#8217;m hoping it will appear soon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.uva.nl\/research\/cmpa\/slides.php?wsId=21\">here<\/a> (or maybe a commenter who has heard the talk in Amsterdam or elsewhere can tell us more about it&#8230;)<\/li>\n<li>While I&#8217;m not sure how strongly Witten feels about string theory these days, there&#8217;s not much ambiguity in the case of Michio Kaku.  He was on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colbertnation.com\/the-colbert-report-videos\/340747\/july-05-2010\/michio-kaku\">Colbert Report<\/a> Monday night and has a recent blog entry arguing that <a href=\"http:\/\/bigthink.com\/ideas\/20718\">We Physicists Are the Only Scientists Who Can Say the Word \u201cGod\u201d and Not Blush<\/a>:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>As you know, I work in something called String Theory which makes the statement that we are reading the mind of God. It\u2019s based on music or little vibrating strings thus giving us particles that we see in nature. The laws of chemistry that we struggled with in high school would be the melodies that you can play on these vibrating strings. The Universe would be a symphony of these vibrating strings and the mind of God that Einstein wrote about at length would be cosmic music resonating through this nirvana\u2026 through this 11 dimensional hyperspace\u2014that would be the mind of God. We physicists are the only scientists who can say the word \u201cGod\u201d and not blush. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> If you&#8217;re in New York and want to help him defeat a Cyborg Army on July 16th, see <a href=\"http:\/\/bigthink.com\/ideas\/20817\">this<\/a>.\n<\/li>\n<li>As for me, I&#8217;m heading soon for Patagonia to try and see another eclipse. After that I&#8217;ll be traveling in South America for a couple weeks, won&#8217;t be able to help with the Cyborgs since I should be somewhere around Lake Titicaca on the 16th.
