For some discussion of it, see <a href=\"http:\/\/sbseminar.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/14\/math-overflow\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/sbseminar.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/15\/why-do-i-find-mathoverflow-fun-and-nlab-not\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>For yet another wonderful new site about research mathematics, there&#8217;s the French <a href=\"http:\/\/images.math.cnrs.fr\/\">Images des Math&eacute;matiques<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Why is there nothing in theoretical physics anywhere near as good as the above two sites?<\/li>\n<li>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uslhc.us\/?p=2608\">Flip Tanedo<\/a>, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=113883274\">NPR story<\/a> about Berkeley&#8217;s parking spaces for Nobelists.  He neglects to mention that, starting with Vaughan Jones in 1990, Berkeley started providing equivalent parking spaces for Fields medalists.<\/li>\n<li>It looks like multiverse mania is not just an American phenomenon, since there&#8217;s a new popular book on the multiverse out in Germany <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piper-verlag.de\/sachbuch\/buch.php?id=15760&#038;page=buchaz\">Die verr&uuml;ckte Welt der Paralleluniversen<\/a>, by Tobias H&uuml;rter and Max Rauner. For a synopsis in English, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.new-books-in-german.com\/english\/522\/242\/91\/129002\/design1.html\">here<\/a>.  The authors have a blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/vielewelten.de\/Wordpress\/\">Multiversum<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Perimeter Institute has just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perimeterinstitute.ca\/News\/In_The_Media\/Expanding_the_Perimeter_with_The_Stephen_Hawking_Centre_at_PI\">announced<\/a> more details of their expansion plans.  The new 55,000 square foot expansion of their building will be named the Stephen Hawking Centre at Perimeter Institute.  They have doubled the number of Distinguished Research Chairs to 20, with ten new appointments announced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perimeterinstitute.ca\/en\/News\/In_The_Media\/Ten_New_Distinguished_Research_Chairs_Join_Perimeter\">here<\/a>. Director Neil Turok is giving a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perimeterinstitute.ca\/News\/In_The_Media\/PI@Ten:_Looking_Ahead\/\">talk<\/a> about their plans today, video should be on-line soon.<\/li>\n<li>This week at Perimeter they&#8217;re having a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.q2cfestival.com\/\">Quantum to Cosmos Festival<\/a>.  It started off Thursday night with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.q2cfestival.com\/play.php?lecture_id=7976\">discussion<\/a> by 9 physicists organized around &#8220;what keeps them up at night&#8221;.  String theorist David Tong explained that he used to be kept up at night worrying about whether string theory unification could ever be tested, scientifically justifying the subject.  Nowadays though, he says he sleeps fine since he no longer needs to worry about this: even if string theory unification is untestable, string theory research can be justified because it provides approximate calculational methods that might be useful in nuclear or condensed matter physics.<\/li>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a wonderful new research mathematics site: Math Overflow.
