See some <A href=\"http:\/\/cosmicvariance.com\/2005\/07\/19\/fortress-of-solitude\/\">comments by Clifford Johnson<\/A>.  There was also a <A href=\"http:\/\/www.ippp.dur.ac.uk\/pre-SUSY05\/program.html\">Pre-SUSY 2005<\/A> workshop aimed at graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>Also at Durham, a workshop on <A href=\"http:\/\/www.maths.dur.ac.uk\/php\/lms_timetable.php?job=timetable&#038;meeting_name=GCFTST\">Geometry, Conformal Field Theory and String Theory<\/A>, blogging from <A href=\"http:\/\/ppcook.blogspot.com\">Paul Cook<\/A>.<\/p>\n<p><A href=\"http:\/\/www.admin.ias.edu\/pitp\/2005files\/schedule2005.html\">Introduction to Collider Physics<\/A>, a summer program aimed at graduate students, taking place at the Institute in Princeton.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s SLAC summer institute is on <A href=\"http:\/\/www-conf.slac.stanford.edu\/ssi\/2005\/program.htm\">Gravity in the Quantum World and the Cosmos<\/A>.  Sean Carroll is lecturing there and may have more to say about it over at <A href=\"http:\/\/cosmicvariance.com\">Cosmic Variance<\/A>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a <A href=\"http:\/\/tsi2005.phys.ntu.edu.tw\/program.html\">Summer Institute<\/A> going on in Taipei, and a <A href=\"http:\/\/theor.jinr.ru\/~diastp\/summer05\/lect.html\">summer school<\/A> in Dubna.<\/p>\n<p>The <A href=\"http:\/\/www.fc.up.pt\/cfp\/omgtp2005\/\">summer meeting in Oporto<\/A> has taken place.  I&#8217;d love to hear from anyone who was there about Graeme Segal&#8217;s lectures.<\/p>\n<p>The <A href=\"http:\/\/insti.physics.sunysb.edu\/itp\/conf\/simonswork3\/talks.html\">Simons Workshop<\/A> in Stony Brook has started, leading off with a talk by Cumrun Vafa on <A href=\"http:\/\/insti.physics.sunysb.edu\/itp\/conf\/simonswork3\/talks\/Vafa1.pdf\">The Swamp Surrounding the Landscape<\/A>.  He seems to be suggesting that theorists should be spending their time investigating the &#8220;swamp&#8221; of possible effective field theories for which it is unknown whether they can be the low energy limit of a string theory. Why he thinks its a good idea to try and lead the field into a &#8220;swamp&#8221; is very unclear to me, although one could argue it is already there anyway&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><b>Update:<\/b>  A commenter properly takes me to task for ignoring what&#8217;s going on down under.  There&#8217;s been a <A href=\"http:\/\/streetfest.maths.mq.edu.au\/\">Conference in honor of Ross Street&#8217;s 60th birthday<\/A>, together with one <A href=\"http:\/\/streetfest.maths.mq.edu.au\/workshop\/\">workshop on categorical methods<\/A> and another one on <A href=\"http:\/\/wwwmaths.anu.edu.au\/events\/ngit05\/\">noncommutative geometry and index theory<\/A>, all covered extensively by bloggers over at the <A href=\"http:\/\/golem.ph.utexas.edu\/string\/index.shtml\">String Coffee Table<\/A>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lots of conferences are going on right around now, here&#8217;s some of them, many with on-line versions of the talks.
