{"id":1938,"date":"2009-05-07T11:07:17","date_gmt":"2009-05-07T16:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=1938"},"modified":"2009-05-07T11:07:17","modified_gmt":"2009-05-07T16:07:17","slug":"witten-away-from-the-energy-frontier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=1938","title":{"rendered":"Witten Away From the Energy Frontier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Edward Witten has been visiting CERN this past academic year, and it seems that besides continuing to work on things related to geometric Langlands (see his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icms.org.uk\/downloads\/GandP\/Witten.pdf\">recent talk<\/a> at Atiyah80), he also has been returning to his <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/0550-3213(77)90038-4\">roots as a phenomenologist<\/a>, and taking a wide interest in a range of phenomenological questions being discussed at CERN.  <\/p>\n<p>Next week CERN will be hosting a workshop on <a href=\"http:\/\/indico.cern.ch\/conferenceOtherViews.py?view=standard&#038;confId=51128\">New Opportunities in the Physics Landscape at CERN<\/a>, to discuss experiments at CERN over the next 5-10 years that are NOT directly related to the LHC.  Witten will open the workshop with a talk on <em>Perspectives in the Physics Landscape away from the Energy Frontier<\/em>, and his slides are already <a href=\"http:\/\/indico.cern.ch\/getFile.py\/access?contribId=135&#038;sessionId=1&#038;resId=0&#038;materialId=slides&#038;confId=51128\">available<\/a>.  He comments on a variety of topics, including CMB measurements relevant to inflation, neutrino masses and mixings, proton decay, CP violation and axions, and dark matter candidates.
