{"id":14047,"date":"2024-07-31T19:30:15","date_gmt":"2024-07-31T23:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=14047"},"modified":"2024-11-07T09:15:44","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T14:15:44","slug":"various-and-sundry-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=14047","title":{"rendered":"Various and Sundry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few items of different kinds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Harvard Math department website has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.math.harvard.edu\/faculty-spotlight-dick-gross-professor-emeritus\/\">wonderful profile of Dick Gross<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icbs.cn\/site\/pages\/index\/index?pageId=930f0000-54af-a6e2-31c3-08dc45561427\">International Congress of Basic Science<\/a> ended a few days ago in Beijing.  A huge number of interesting talks, video and slides available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icbs.cn\/site\/pages\/index\/index?pageId=c00c6f63-a311-40da-8fa3-4e8cb7cddb05\">here<\/a>. My Columbia colleague Richard Hamilton was one of the winners of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icbs.cn\/site\/pages\/index\/index?pageId=4dfae3aa-cfe2-41a3-885f-f2f6c3be1e6d\">Basic Science Lifetime Award<\/a>, unclear how much wealthier this makes him and his fellow awardees.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alphaxiv.org\/\">Alphaxiv<\/a> is a new website allowing for research discussion of arXiv papers.<\/li>\n<li>The Gates Foundation evidently is <a href=\"https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/policy\/publishing\/future-science-publishing\/102\/i23\">no longer going to pay publishing costs for open access journals<\/a>.  The problem is that this kind of funding incentivizes some sorts of bad publishing practices.  They refer to<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>unsavory publishing practices by poor actors (paper mills, questionable quality review, unchecked pricing)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Perimeter Institute last week had a <a href=\"https:\/\/pirsa.org\/c24028\">summer school on Celestial Holography<\/a>. This <a href=\"https:\/\/pirsa.org\/24070024\">panel discussion<\/a> explains some of what the people involved are trying to do.<\/li>\n<li>Curt Jaimungal has been planning a series of programs on <em>Rethinking the Foundations of Physics<\/em>, with the topic &#8220;What is Unification?&#8221;.  For the first program, featuring Neil Turok, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-gwhqmPqRl4\">here<\/a>. I&#8217;ll record something on Friday, part of the plan evidently is a lot of questions.
