He had only recently retired, and for many years was the longest serving member of the department and an important part of its institutional memory.  On October 10 there will be a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/2019\/08\/21\/memorial-conference-for-patrick-ximenes-gallagher\/\">memorial conference here at Columbia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s too bad Pat didn&#8217;t live to see the <a href=\"https:\/\/terrytao.wordpress.com\/2019\/08\/26\/large-prime-gaps-and-probabilistic-models\/\">latest from Terry Tao<\/a>, who describes <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1908.08613\">recent results<\/a> which are related to <a href=\"https:\/\/mathscinet.ams.org\/mathscinet-getitem?mr=409385\">old work of Gallagher&#8217;s<\/a> by &#8220;Our proof of this theorem proceeds more or less along the same lines as Gallagher\u2019s calculation, but now with <em>k<\/em> allowed to grow slowly with <em>x<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Turning to other topics, Peter Scholze continues to come up with new ideas about the foundations of mathematics at a pace far too fast for me to fool myself into thinking I might be able to follow what he&#8217;s doing. In recent months he has run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.math.uni-bonn.de\/people\/scholze\/Condensed.pdf\">a course on &#8220;Condensed Mathematics&#8221;<\/a>, which involves new ideas about topology developed with Dustin Clausen.  For a video of a recent talk where he explains this, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpim-bonn.mpg.de\/node\/9678\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the Langlands\/representation theory front, some interesting things are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maths.usyd.edu.au\/u\/geordie\/LanglandsAndBezrukavnikov\/\"> course run by Geordie Williamson<\/a> in Sydney earlier this year.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re interested in what Williamson is up to, you might want to watch videos from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maths.usyd.edu.au\/u\/geordie\/dacha\/index.html\">&#8220;somewhere in Russia&#8221; last month<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/scgp.stonybrook.edu\/archives\/25603\">&#8220;somewhere on Long Island&#8221; last week<\/a>.  Lecture notes are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maths.usyd.edu.au\/u\/geordie\/stonybrook\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Also in Russia last month, at the Skoltech Center for Advanced Studies, where my Columbia colleague Igor Krichever is <a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.skoltech.ru\/people\/igorkrichever\">director<\/a>, there was a <a href=\"https:\/\/crei.skoltech.ru\/cas\/calendar\/conf190701\/titles\/\">skoltech summer school on mathematical physics<\/a>, with some of the lectures on video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLLGkFbxve673cVRaHenTEV8rRnMjc_z1C\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Several new papers addressing different points of view about geometric Langlands are out, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1908.09677\">very recent one from Etingof, Frenkel and Kazhdan<\/a>.  For some background on the relation of this to work by Langlands himself, see <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1812.08160\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=10666\">here<\/a>. For some geometric Langlands-related work of a different sort, see <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1908.05420.pdf\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1907.03204\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, the 2019 PCMI was devoted to the topic of <em>Quantum Field Theory and Manifold Invariants<\/em>, videos are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCx593kvk9NcwtCIjxXqZkrg\/playlists?view=50&#038;sort=dd&#038;shelf_id=22\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: Also on the Langlands\/representation theory\/quantum front, this week at Northeastern there&#8217;s a conference going on (rumored to be celebrating the fact that Etingof and Okounkov share the same birthday, and are now 50).
