{"id":10205,"date":"2018-04-12T12:20:58","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T16:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=10205"},"modified":"2018-04-17T16:55:26","modified_gmt":"2018-04-17T20:55:26","slug":"math-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~woit\/wordpress\/?p=10205","title":{"rendered":"Math News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Various mathematics-related news:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Perimeter Institute has been moving towards an increased engagement with mathematics and mathematicians in recent years.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perimeterinstitute.ca\/news\/three-new-appointments-bolster-mathematics-cosmology-perimeter\">Matilde Marcolli and Ben Webster<\/a> are now joining them as Associate Faculty.<\/li>\n<li>Quanta magazine has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantamagazine.org\/mathematicians-explore-mirror-link-between-two-geometric-worlds-20180409\/\">excellent article by Kevin Hartnett<\/a> on the state of efforts by mathematicians to understand mirror symmetry.\n<\/li>\n<li>My colleague Dorian Goldfeld has become editor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journals.elsevier.com\/journal-of-number-theory\">Journal of Number Theory<\/a>, succeeding David Goss, who passed away last year.  He tells me that the journal will sponsor a biennial conference, first one next year, announcement <a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.columbia.edu\/~goldfeld\/JNTBiennial2019.html\">here<\/a>.  There will also every two years be a David Goss prize awarded to a young researcher in number theory.<\/li>\n<li>The latest Notices has an interesting and extensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/journals\/notices\/201804\/rnoti-p390.pdf\">article about Claire Voisin<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>John Baez has an ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.azimuthproject.org\/discussion\/1717\/welcome-to-the-applied-category-theory-course\">online course on Applied Category Theory<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Mathematician\/musician Tom Lehrer is 90 this month, and there&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-018-03922-x\">story about him at Nature<\/a>.  For an example of his music, listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gXlfXirQF3A\">Lobachevsky<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;d missed the news that Roger Howe now has <a href=\"https:\/\/today.tamu.edu\/2015\/06\/05\/world-renowned-mathematician-and-mathematics-educator-joins-faculty\/\">a tenure-track position at Texas A &#038; M<\/a>.  Good luck to him on getting tenure!  Howe duality is very much worth knowing about, here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/d777\/06f733066af9b8d9d0088b617f8f45bbd73c.pdf\">an expository treatment<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nUpdate<\/strong>:  This Friday and Saturday there will be a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethics.maths.cam.ac.uk\/EiM1\/\">meeting in Cambridge<\/a> on the topic of Ethics in Mathematics.
