I see that the report of the &#8220;Mission Villani&#8221; is now available (in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiforhumanity.fr\/pdfs\/9782111457089_Rapport_Villani_accessible.pdf\">French<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiforhumanity.fr\/pdfs\/MissionVillani_Report_ENG-VF.pdf\">English<\/a>) and it&#8217;s front page news at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/pixels\/article\/2018\/03\/28\/intelligence-artificielle-ce-qu-il-faut-retenir-du-rapport-de-cedric-villani_5277697_4408996.html\">le Monde<\/a>.  There&#8217;s also an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiforhumanity.fr\/\">AI for Humanity website<\/a> now up, and plans for all sorts of events tomorrow (video <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rX1XbyNBdaE\">here<\/a>) involving Villani and French president Macron.\n<p>For insight into what this means, you&#8217;ll need an AI expert.  I&#8217;m curious to hear if there&#8217;s anything really surprising in the report.<\/li>\n<li>Neil Turok and collaborators have a new proposal for how to understand the Big Bang, with the headline version &#8220;The universe before the bang and the universe after the bang may be viewed as a universe\/anti-universe pair, created from nothing.&#8221;  There&#8217;s a short summary <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1803.08928\">here<\/a>, a longer paper with details <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1803.08930\">here<\/a>.\n<p>The papers make various claims of predictions, I&#8217;m curious to hear from cosmologists what they think of these. Much of the papers does look like fairly straightforward QFT calculations, which I&#8217;ll try to look at more carefully when I find time.<\/li>\n<li>The LHC is now in a <a href=\"https:\/\/op-webtools.web.cern.ch\/vistar\/vistars.php?usr=LHC1\">machine checkout phase<\/a>, ready for resurrection around Easter Sunday, with the start of beam commissioning for the 2018 run. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: A wealth of analyses of physics papers is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/rtorre.web.cern.ch\/rtorre\/PhysRank\/index.html\">this website<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1803.10713\">this preprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reader Chris W. pointed me to this story about what C&eacute;dric Villani, aka the Lady Gaga of French mathematics, has been up to.
