Title: Characterizing algebraic varieties through symmetries

Abstract: The goal of this talk is to explore what the group of birational automorphisms can say about a variety. We will then focus on the case of algebraic varieties that birationally split off a copy of projective space. This is joint work with L. Esser, A. Regeta, C. Urech, and I. van Santen.
