Chern classes for reductive groups -- Valentina Kiritchenko, March 25, 2005

I will first recall some well-known results for toric varieties such as simple computation of their Chern classes and explicit formulas for the Euler characteristic of complete intersections. Then I will discuss how these results can be extended to the case when a toric variety is replaced by a compactification of an arbitrary complex reductive group. This leads to a construction of analogs of the Chern classes for reductive groups and to a noncompact adjunction formula for complete intersections.
