The major topics will cover Chapter 1 through Chapter 7 of our text book. These include matrices, determinants, inner products, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, linear spaces and their relation with matrices. If time allows, we will cover some additional topics from Chapter 8 and 9, which include symmetric matrices, quadratic forms and linear differential equations. Textbook: Otto Bretscher, Linear Algebra with applications, Fifth Edition,
The homework assignments and due days will be posted here: [ Homework ]
Homework: There will be weekly problem sets, due at the beginning of class on every Wednesday. The first problem set will be due on Wednesday, January 28. You can put your homework in the homework box before the class, or hand it to me right after the class. The Midterm and final exams will be closely related to the homework assignments. You should understand how to do every problem correctly. Collaboration and discussion with your classmates is encouraged, but you must write up assignments individually. Homework Pickup:Graded homework will be available on the table outside 613 Mathematics. Late homework will not be accepted. Exams: There will be two 75minute midterm exams and a final. The dates for the midterms are as follows:
Grading: The final course grade will be determined by: Homework: 10%
Help: Besides my office hours, help is also available without appointment in the Mathematics Help Room (406 Mathematics) whenever it is open. The Help Room is staffed both by faculty and teaching assistants, who will be able to help you with questions related to this course.
