Math V2010 Linear Algebra, Section 001 and Section 002

Spring 2015

Instructor: Qile Chen (Office 628 Mathematics).
Office hours: Tuesday 2:00 -- 4:00 pm in 628 Math, or by email appointment.
Email: q_chen@math.columbia.edu

We have four TAs. Their office hours are as follows:
Yinghui Wang: Wednesday 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Zijun Zhou: Monday 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Ha-young Shin: Friday 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Ming Zhao: Thursday 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
The location is the math help room.

The major topics will cover Chapter 1 through Chapter 7 of our text book. These include matrices, determinants, inner products, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, linear spaces and their relation with matrices. If time allows, we will cover some additional topics from Chapter 8 and 9, which include symmetric matrices, quadratic forms and linear differential equations.

Textbook: Otto Bretscher, Linear Algebra with applications, Fifth Edition,

The homework assignments and due days will be posted here: [ Homework ]

Homework: There will be weekly problem sets, due at the beginning of class on every Wednesday. The first problem set will be due on Wednesday, January 28. You can put your homework in the homework box before the class, or hand it to me right after the class. The Midterm and final exams will be closely related to the homework assignments. You should understand how to do every problem correctly. Collaboration and discussion with your classmates is encouraged, but you must write up assignments individually.

Homework Pick-up:Graded homework will be available on the table outside 613 Mathematics. Late homework will not be accepted.

Exams: There will be two 75-minute midterm exams and a final. The dates for the midterms are as follows:

  • First Midterm, Wednesday, Feb. 25, in class
  • Second Midterm, Wednesday, Apr. 1, in class
  • Final for Section 001: Monday, 05/11/2015 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at MAT 312.
  • Final for Section 002: Friday, 05/08/2015 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at MAT 312.
  • The final exam is scheduled by the university. It must be taken at the scheduled time.
If you have two final examinations scheduled at the same time, it is the responsibility of the other department to provide an alternate exam. Examinations will not be rescheduled because of travel arrangements -- it is your responsibility to schedule travel appropriately. Makeup midterms will be given only under exceptional circumstances and you will need a note from a doctor or a dean.

Grading: The final course grade will be determined by:

Homework: 10%
Midterm exams each: 20%
Final exam: 50%.

Help: Besides my office hours, help is also available without appointment in the Mathematics Help Room (406 Mathematics) whenever it is open. The Help Room is staffed both by faculty and teaching assistants, who will be able to help you with questions related to this course.
