Class meets: Tuesday & Thursday at 1:10-2:25 PM in Mathematics 203

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to partial differential equations, emphasizing on the three classical equations: wave, heat (diffusion) and Laplace equations.
We will present the properties of these equations and techniques to analyze them. The methods which will be presented in this course include the maximum principle, fundamental solutions and transform methods for problems on the line and separation of variables, using orthogonal series, for problems  in regions with boundary.  Emphasis will be given to theory as well as applications.

Prerequisites: Calculus I-IV and ODE's.

Text: Partial Differential Equations: An introduction, by Walter A. Strauss, Second Edition.

Homework: Weekly problem sets. Drop the homework in the homework box on the 4th floor before Tuesday, 4:00pm of each week.  The lowest 2 hwk scores will be dropped at the end.

Midterm: One midterm, in class, on March 8

Final Exam: One three hour final examination at the end of the term on the date scheduled by the registrar. No exams will be given at a different date. The projected date, set by the registrar, is Tuesday May 8 from 1:10-4:00 pm.

Grading: The course grades will be computed as follows: 20% Homework, 30% Midterm and 50% Final.
