Abstract:

We show that any arc-presentation of the unknot can be transformed to the trivial circle by applying elementary moves that do not increase the number of arcs. This is achieved by developing further a technique that was worked out by J.Birman and W.Menasco for studying closed braids and adapted for arc-presentatinos by P.Cromwell. The basic ideas of the theory are due to D.Bennequin.
