2007 Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Since 1999, in most years the Mathematics Department has run summer research programs aimed at rising junior and senior math majors in Columbia College, GS, SEAS and Barnard.  There have been anywhere from two to four small groups of students working with a faculty member and a graduate student on projects accessible to undergraduates, for about ten weeks starting at the end of May. The summer programs have proved to be a highly popular opportunity for students to experience the excitement of research in mathematics.  This summer's program, organized by Professor Robert Friedman, was comprised of two groups:

Knot Theory Group

Robert Lipshitz - Faculty
Thomas Peters - Graduate Student

Yael Degany
Andrew Freimuth
Jonathan Hales
Dmytro Karabash
Michael Lock
Edward Trefts

The Knot Theory Group wrote this paper:

A Modification of the Sarkar-Wang Algorithm and an Analysis of its Computational Complexity

Number Theory Group

Mirela Ciperiani - Faculty
Kimball Martin - Faculty
Joe Ross - Graduate Student

Atanas Atanasov
Rebecca Bellovin
Ivan Loughman-Pawelko
Laura Peskin
Eric Potash

The Number Theory Group wrote this paper:

Representations of Integers as Sums of Triangular Numbers

And recently published in a new undergraduate math research journal:
