Welcome to our new Website. We have designed this website so that users from within the Columbia Mathematics Department should be able to find (easily we hope) all the information that they are accustomed to finding on the previous departmental website. In addition, we have designed this website so that it will be useable and informative for those outside our walls seeking information about the department, be they Columbia undergraduates, prospective undergraduate and graduate students, prospective faculty, visitors, or our alumni.
Feedback, both as to what is useful and clearly presented and as to what is hard to find or unintuitive as well as other information you would like to see on the website, from any and all visitors is welcomed and appreciated. Please send all feedback to Peter Woit at woit@math.columbia.edu.
Congratulations are in order for Natasa Sesum and Robert Neel. These two Ritt Assistant Professors have been awarded prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowships. Natasa has been awarded an MSRI Fellowship for the Spring of 2007 to attend their special program on Geometric Evolution Equations. We shall miss Natasa during this semester. (Our own Toti Daskalopoulos is one the organizers of this activity.) Robert Neel has been awarded an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship. Robert plans to take his fellowship here at Columbia so the only Columbians who will miss him are the Calculus students during the semesters that he is not teaching.
Congratulations to Richard Hamilton. Richard has been appointed as the Davies Chair in Mathematics. Previous holders of this chair include Masatake Kuranishi, Lipman Bers, Paul Smith, and Joseph Fels Ritt.
