Chapter 5. Cryptography

One of the most important applications of number theory is to public-key cryptohraphy. This chapter studies public-key systems after a brief discussion of some simple secret-key ciphers. The shift, substitution, and Vigenere systems are discussed.

Public-key cryptography was introduced by Diffie and Hellman in 1975 to correct some of the deficiencies of classical secret-key cryptosystems.
