index

Abstract:

I will explain how certain theorems of Dahmen--Micchelli on
splines and partition functions  can be interpreted in the theory of the
index of transversally elliptic operators.  I will then show how ideas of
approximation theory fit into the relation between equivariant K-theory
and equivariant cohomology, using a new tool developed
with De Concini, Vergne called the "infinitesimal index".
