Administration of the Columbia VIGRE Program


The overall grant is administered by Principal Investigators, consisting of professors Robert Friedman (chair), Brian Greene, Ioannis Karatzas, Igor Krichever, Walter Neumann, and D. H. Phong.

This committee is responsible for all communication with the NSF and the advisory panel. In particular it writes the year-end reports. Committees that report to the Principal Investigators are:

  • The hiring of the Ritt/VIGRE post-doctoral fellows is handled by the VIGRE Hiring Committee, consisting of professors Walter Neumann (chair), Panagiota Daskalopoulos, Robert Friedman, and Peter Woit.

  • This committee is responsible for:

    • negotiating with the Columbia Administration, namely the Vice President of Arts and Sciences, how many VIGRE appointments will be made every year; 
    • advertising, recruiting and selection of the VIGRE post-docs; 
    • assigning faculty mentors for all VIGRE post-docs, and, more generally, supervision of their professional activities; 

    •  

       

  • The supervision of graduate students supported by the VIGRE grant is handled by the Director of Graduate Studies, currently Igor Krichever, together with the chair of the department. It is responsible for:

  •  
    • devising a plan for deploying our graduate student teaching resources under VIGRE; 
    • negotiating with the Columbia Administration, namely the dean of the Graduate School, how many VIGRE graduate students will be admitted every year; 
    • negotiating with the Columbia Administration, namely the dean of the Graduate School, how the funds freed by the VIGRE program will be used to improve the support of other graduate students, or help recruit students, or help the department hire ; 
    • preparing recruiting materials, and more generally a plan for recruiting graduate students, by, for instance, planning a visiting weekend for all prospective graduate students admitted by the department. This will be done with the help of a recruitment committee which will consist largely of current graduate students; 
    • supervising the research and teaching of all VIGRE supported students; 

    •  

       

    The selection and supervision of the undergraduate Rabi/VIGRE scholars is handled by the VIGRE Undergraduate Committee, consisting of professors Walter Neumann (chair), Jeff Achter, and Robert Friedman. It is responsible for:
     
    • selecting the Rabi/VIGRE scholars from our undergraduate mathematics majors; 
    • providing and supervising their research activities. 
    • supervising their teaching activities.

  • The reform of the first year Ph.D. curriculum is handled by the Curriculum Reform Committee, consisting of professors  Brian Greene, Ioannis Karatzas, John Morgan, Duong Phong (chair), Shou-Wu Zhang.

  • The charge of this committee is to monitor the first year curriculum.
