Xander Faber will give the talk on Friday, February 6 at noon in Math 417. This lecture will be open to graduate and undergraduate students only.
Abstract: We will look at the behavior of a holomorphic endomorphism of a Riemann surface under repeated iteration (i.e. a self-map f:X->X applied over and over again). The Julia set of such a map is the locus of points in X around which the behavior of the map is "chaotic." I will share a bunch of interesting facts about this set like why it is a fractal and how one goes about drawing it.
